Fire restrictions have been lifted early across most of Victoria, but the Country Fire Authority is warning people to remain vigilant.

CFA chief officer Russell Rees said the fire danger period had ended early in many municipalities, after good summer rainfalls.

"While we have had another hot summer, areas of Victoria have recorded their highest summer rainfall in more than 10 years," Mr Rees said in a statement.

Some fire restrictions remain in place in Victoria's southwest, but restrictions have been lifted across the rest of the state.

However, Mr Rees said people still needed to take "extreme care" and be aware of local regulations and conditions.

CFA brigades responded to more than 2,500 grass and scrub fires over summer, which were brought under control quickly without damage to life or property, Mr Rees said.

"This is a credit to our members and their dedication to Victorian communities," Mr Rees said.
