The Victorian government will review the administration of the state's police.
Premier Ted Baillieu announced the review following chief commissioner Simon Overland's decision to order his deputy Sir Ken Jones to leave his office immediately last Friday.
Sir Ken had announced his resignation last Monday and was planning to finish in August but was told by Mr Overland to leave immediately.
Mr Baillieu said the review would examine the structure of the senior command of the force.
The premier said he was concerned by Mr Overland's actions and that he and police minister Peter Ryan were not told of the chief commissioner's decision beforehand.
Mr Baillieu said he had been advised that Mr Overland was within his rights to tell Sir Ken to leave his office immediately but would have preferred to have been advised before it happened.
In a meeting with the chief commissioner on the weekend, Mr Baillieu told Mr Overland he should have told the government of his decision.
But Mr Baillieu and Mr Ryan said despite calling a review, they have confidence in Mr Overland.
"Simon Overland is the chief commissioner of police, he is supported by the government," Mr Ryan told reporters following a lengthy cabinet meeting on Monday.
The review will be headed by Jack Rush QC, who was the counsel assisting the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
