Homes are under threat as an out-of-control bushfire burns through plantations and bushland near the Victoria-South Australian border.

A watch and act alert has been issued for Hotspur, Lower Crawford, Glenaulin and Greenwald East, west of Warrnambool, and residents have been told to leave immediately.

Spot fires and ember attacks are starting up to 500 metres ahead of the main fire and are expected to hit houses between 5pm and 7pm.
