Kurdish mourners will gather in Melbourne to honour a Gold Coast man who died aiding the fight against Islamic State militants in Syria.

Up to 1000 mourners are expected to attend a traditional Kurdish funeral for 23-year-old Reece Harding in Pascoe Vale from 2pm on Sunday.

Reece was killed in June when he stepped on a land mind while supporting the Kurdish YPG, People's Defence Units.

Keith and Michele Harding will attend the funeral and say they are humbled by the Kurdish community's dedication to honour their son.

"It just shows how much he was loved by the Kurdish community," Mr Harding told AAP.

Organiser Mahmut Kahramanm said the service would feature speeches about the sacrifice Reece had made in the name of the Kurdish people.

His body will later be brought home to the Gold Coast for a family funeral on August 1.

Sunday's service will be held at the Kurdish Association of Victoria's headquarters at Pascoe Vale.
