Victorian MP leaves parliamentary Labor

Ex-deputy speaker Don Nardella has resigned from the parliamentary Labor Party rather than pay back $100,000 he controversially claimed as an entitlement.

WHO HAD TO QUIT PARLIAMENTARY LABOR?

* Former deputy speaker Don Nardella resigned on Tuesday after refusing Premier Daniel Andrews' order to pay back $100,000.

* He claimed the entitlement designed to help rural MPs in order to live in Ocean Grove, more than 80km from Melbourne and not in his suburban Melton electorate.

* Mr Nardella has been told to talk to the ALP state secretary about whether he can stay in the party outside of parliament.

WHO HAD TO RESIGN FROM PARLIAMENTARY OFFICE?

* Mr Nardella quit as deputy Speaker 10 days ago after he was caught claiming the second residence allowance.

* He quit the same day as Telmo Languiller resigned as Speaker because he was caught claiming almost $40,000 in the same allowance to live in Queenscliff, another seaside town outside his electorate.

WHERE TO NOW?

* Member for Bundoora Colin Brooks became Speaker on Tuesday and Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards is his deputy

* Pricewaterhouse Coopers is combing the entitlement claims of both Mr Nardella and Mr Languiller as part of the parliamentary audit committee's investigation.

* A report is expected back next week

* Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings will examine the parliamentary entitlements system.

* Mr Languiller will pay back the amount he claimed.

OTHER "ENTITLEMENT" SCANDALS

* State Labor's Steve Herbert resigned as corrections minister last year after he used his taxpayer-funded car to chauffeur his dogs between his homes

* The Andrews government is currently taking a fight to the High Court over whether the state's Ombudsman can investigate claims Labor MPs misused allowances during the 2014 election campaign.

* Former senior Liberal and former federal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop took a $5000 helicopter ride between Melbourne and Geelong to attend a Liberal party fundraiser in 2015.

* Sussan Ley resigned from the Turnbull Liberal government frontbench over revelations including that she used taxpayer-funded trips to buy property and attend New Year's Eve functions.

* Liberal-turned-independent state MP Geoff Shaw was suspended from parliament and ordered to repay thousands of misused entitlements over use of his taxpayer-funded car.
