All you Victorians filming your genitals - you've been breaking the law.

Sex Party MP Fiona Patten wants to change Victoria's X-rated classification laws to bring them in line with federal legislation.

"It's been my mission for 20 years and I'm not giving up," she told AAP on Thursday.

Victorians can legally buy, own and watch X-rated films, but can't sell them or film them.

Ms Patten said the "crazy" law was especially outdated thanks to the internet, and it hampered efforts to regulate online pornography.

The law forbidding the act of filming X-rated material doesn't apply to taking photographs.

"You can take a photo of a naked man with an erection, but not film it," Ms Patten said.

She put forward a motion in parliament calling for Victoria to match federal classification laws introduced under the Howard government.

"I can hope (Premier) Daniel Andrews is not as conservative as John Howard," she said.

Ms Patten said she had limited power as an independent MP, but hoped the other parties would accept the need for a sensible change.
