Police could charge as many as 120 prisoners over a riot that caused at least $12 million damage to a Melbourne prison.

Inmates broke into staff areas, smashed doors, walls and fences, and ruined the fire alarm and heating systems at the remand centre in Ravenhall in June.

Some prisoners are still in 23-hour lockdown three months after the riot, leaving some potentially eligible for sentence reductions.

Corrections Victoria Commissioner Jan Shuard said police would lay a variety of charges when they're ready.

"I expect there will be charges laid out of the riot given the extensive damage that was caused to that prison," Ms Shuard told 3AW on Friday.

Police did not confirm a report in The Age that a police task force investigating the riot at the Metropolitan Remand Centre is expected to charge 120 inmates.

"Detectives have interviewed a number of persons of interest and taken in excess of 300 statements from witnesses," a Victoria Police spokeswoman told AAP on Friday.

"This type of investigation is often lengthy, arduous and requires painstaking work to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice."

The Age reported an independent investigation into the riot has been told senior prison officials ignored or underplayed the threat of disturbances ahead of the July 1 prison smoking ban.

A cost estimate of the riot damage has been put at $12 million but it could go as high as $20-$25 million.
