A Victorian primary school that went into lockdown after students reported seeing a gunman in a ski mask has been declared safe.
Police officers are doorknocking the area but children have been allowed to go home from Beveridge Primary School north of Melbourne.
A few hours after the scare on Thursday afternoon the area was declared safe, a police spokeswoman said, adding there'd been "no confirmed sighting of a firearm or of a man".
The school enacted its emergency management plan after students reported seeing a man - dressed in black and wearing a ski mask - carrying a gun.
"Parents got a text about 2.37pm saying there was a gunman on the school grounds," parent Jenny told 3AW.
"Four students have reported seeing a man with a gun."
Local police and the air wing were called to the school near Whittlesea, which has 250 enrolled students.
Parents gathered at the post office car park after local roads were closed but they were subsequently allowed to collect their children.
No injuries were reported.
The state education department said the school had gone into temporary lockdown "after students reported a suspicious-looking man near the school".
"Police attended and, following the lockdown, assisted the school with sending students home for the day in a safe manner," a spokesman said in a statement.
