Victoria's Minister for Women Fiona Richardson has died a day after revealing a renewed battle with cancer.
Ms Richardson, who was also first to hold the state's prevention of family violence portfolio, died aged 50 on Wednesday night.
On Tuesday, the long-serving MP said she had been diagnosed with multiple tumours.
"I intended to return to work part time next week, however my recovery is not going the way I had planned," she said.
Elected to the inner seat of Northcote in 2006, Ms Richardson successfully fought cancer in 2013.
The Labor right factional leader announced on August 7 she was taking a leave of absence after undergoing "successful" surgery for a then-unspecified but serious illness.
Federal party leader Bill Shorten took to Twitter on Wednesday evening, saying "we've lost a remarkable, brave and inspirational woman".
"This is so sad. Thinking tonight of everything Fiona Richardson achieved," he wrote.
Victoria's opposition leader Matthew Guy tweeted "the sadness at Spring Street will be immense".
"To her family, friends, colleagues, my thoughts, sympathy and love."
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was expected to issue a statement.
On Tuesday he said Ms Richardson had been an "unwavering advocate" against family violence.
