Victoria's police chief Simon Overland will be reprimanded for carrying bullets on board a domestic flight.
An investigation into the incident has found Mr Overland's security breach was inadvertent.
While the breach can carry a possible jail term or fine, Mr Overland will only receive a letter of reprimand.
"This is consistent with the approach taken where similarly inadvertent incidents have occurred involving police officers," said a statement by the federal Office of Transport Security.
Overland 'cooperative'
Australian Federal Police say Mr Overland was fully cooperative when the bullets were discovered in his bag.
The chief commissioner had taken a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Canberra on Thursday with a magazine of bullets in his carry-on bag.
The bullets were not detected as he passed through a security screening at Melbourne Airport, but later discovered at Canberra Airport when he tried to board a flight home.
A statement from Victoria Police stressed that the incident had been a mistake and a genuine oversight.
