Victory out to stop rampant City women

It's top against bottom in the second Melbourne derby of the W-League season but Victory's Hayley Raso is hoping for an upset against City.

Melbourne Victory believe they can be the first to derail Melbourne City's W-League invincibles in Sunday's derby.

In their maiden campaign, City have been a revelation.

Joe Montemurro's side sat atop the league table after an opening weekend rout of Sydney FC and have stayed there, defeating all three previous league champions and Victory on the way.

It's been a different story for Melbourne Victory, slumping to the bottom of the table after seeing several alumni move across town.

Not until last week did Victory register their first win of their season - a 3-1 triumph in Perth - and winger Hayley Raso says it's given them confidence to upset their more-fancied rivals.

"We have a point to prove," she told AAP.

"From the very beginning there was talk about how good City were going to be with the players they were signing.

"We knew they were going to be very strong and they've shown that.

"But every team has their weaknesses. There has to be a team that can stop them.

"We've been working hard to exploit them and hopefully we can go out and do that."

Victory will have their second crack at toppling the W-League newcomers on Sunday.

Back in October, City edged Victory 2-1 with Raso among a host of players missing due to national team duties.

She's hopeful that Victory can ride the momentum from last weekend's win over Glory - when City had a bye - into Sunday's match at the Veneto Club in Bulleen.

"Finally we produced a result. We combined really well, found each other and played some good football.

"We had our first win and now we feel like we can go on a roll."

Raso is also fighting for herself.

After winning a dozen caps for the Matildas and travelling to the Women's World Cup in June, Raso missed out on selection in Alen Stajcic's latest squad.

"Being left out after being in there so long, it was a real shock," she said.

"It hit me hard not being involved and going to Korea.

"(Alen's) spoken to me about what he wants so I'm going out to do that and get back into the picture."

Victory will be without Laura Spiranovic, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week.

Eight players return from international duty for City, including Welsh midfielder Jess Fishlock who played twice for her country.
