Police have mocked a thief’s two failed attempts to steal an ATM from a northern Queensland service station by releasing a video of the botched burglary.

The would-be thief was caught on camera as he broke into the Townsville business with a brick and sledgehammer on Tuesday night.

Queensland Police included music with the footage, adding comedic value to the video that has so far racked more than half a million views.

It shows the alleged burglar attempting to tie a chain attached to his vehicle around the ATM and make off with it.

But without realising the chain had uncoupled, he speeds off.

He returns a short time later and attempts to re-join the chain, but realises he did not park close enough.

He eventually gives up and flees empty handed for a second time.

The video whas been viewed more than 522,000 times on Facebook.
