Vijay Singh wants Fiji International glory

Former world No.1 Vijay Singh says he would love to win the Fiji International after having a major hand in redesigning the Natadola Bay course.

Home is where the distractions are but Vijay Singh is determined not to let that stop him from winning the Fiji International.

The 54-year-old former World No. 1 has returned to his home country to play at the Natadola Bay course he helped redesign.

With about 80 per cent of his planned alterations to the layout complete, Singh will be focusing less on improving the course and more on how to succeed on it when the opening round gets underway on Thursday.

"I just want to go out there and play the way I know how and take my mind away from so many distractions that go on over here when you get home," Singh said.

"I think if I just focus a little bit harder I can do that."

Fresh from being the oldest player to make the cut in the US PGA Championship, Singh has rushed back to Fiji for the $1.5 million tournament, which is tri-sanctioned by the Australasian, European and Asian tours.

"I think they're all waiting for me to play good golf here," Singh said.

"I've come close to playing good here but it's nice to come here and see old friends.

"I'm playing well coming off two tournaments in the States - one really hard one last week."

While the weather forecast improves as the tournament wears on, wind is likely to play a major factor.

"I'm not a great wind player but I've played pretty good golf in windy conditions before," Singh said.

"If you hit good, solid shots it's going to pay off."

Scott Hend and Andrew Dodt are Australia's main contenders, while New Zealand's Ryan Fox is the pre-tournament favourite.

Singh is joined by two fellow US Masters winners, with Angel Cabrera and Mike Weir adding veteran star power to the line-up.
