Melbourne star Jack Viney faces a one-game AFL ban for striking and up to a month out of action because of hand surgery.

If the onballer accepts the suspension, it would make him ineligible for the Brownlow Medal.

The ban and the injury are because of separate incidents during the opening term of Saturday's 45-point loss to Port Adelaide in Alice Springs.

Viney hurt his right hand early in the first quarter.

While he was able to play out the match, the Demons say the hand became inflamed and he was to have an operation on Monday night.

It will put him out of action for three to four games.

A few minutes after suffering the hand injury, Viney's opponent Brad Ebert ran into his back.

The pair immediately tussled and Viney then landed a combination of three blows on Ebert's face.

The match review panel charged Viney with striking, saying the incident was intentional with low impact.

Viney is the only player facing suspension in the wake of round 10.

Port utility Jackson Trengove can accept a $1000 fine for making unreasonable and unnecessary conduct to the face of Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn.

It is understood the incident happened in a ruck contest.

GWS defender Adam Tomlinson can also take a $1000 penalty for striking Adelaide forward Tom Lynch.

Western Bulldogs pair Jake Stringer ($2500) and Tom Liberatore ($1500) and Collingwood defender Alan Toovey ($1000) were fined for melee involvement.

Hawthorn acting captain Jordan Lewis, Brisbane ruckman Trent West and out-of-sorts Geelong star Steven Motlop were all cleared of incidents.
