Violence has dropped at NSW venues

A 10 per cent decrease in alcohol-related violence incidents at NSW venues has seen the Sydney Cricket Ground taken off the state's violent venues list.

Alcohol-related violence at the Sydney Cricket Ground has dropped in the past year, but at Penrith Panthers in the city's west it's increased enough to get the club on the NSW violent venues list.

There's been a 10 per cent drop in the number of alcohol-related violence episodes recorded in a 12-month period, from 200 to 180, since the last list was published in December, Minister for Justice Troy Grant said in a statement on Friday.

Eight licensed venues including the SCG and The World Bar in Kings Cross are set to be removed from the list from June 1 because they've recorded fewer than 12 incidents in the past year.

But six venues across the state, including Penrith Rugby League Club and several regional hotels, have been added to the list.

"Most licensed venues are getting the message that it just doesn't add up to run an unsafe pub, club or bar, but I'm concerned that there are still some fresh additions to our list that clearly aren't heeding the message," Mr Grant said.

The 12 venues on the latest list have operating conditions imposed on them including no glass or breakable containers after midnight, alcohol time-outs or free water and food after midnight, and no alcohol to be served within half an hour of closing.

Home Nightclub at Sydney's Darling Harbour, which is the only venue to make it onto the highest level of the list with 19 recorded violent incidents in the past year, has extra restrictions such as no shots or doubles after midnight, a limit of four alcoholic drinks per customer per order after midnight, and a 1.30am lockout.

"I encourage all venues on the list to take action to curb alcohol-related violence, because every patron deserves to get home safely after a night out," Mr Grant said.
