Virgin Aust to fly Melb to HK from July

Virgin Australia will commence five return flights a week from Melbourne to Hong Kong from July 5, in a bid to tap the growing Chinese travel market.

Virgin Australia will start flying from Melbourne to Hong Kong from July 5, taking on Qantas and Cathay Pacific on the popular route.

Australia's second biggest airline announced the new route in February but was tight lipped on the Australian city and start date.

Virgin's announcement on Tuesday follows the competition regulator's interim approval of the carrier's proposed alliance with China's biggest private airline operator and shareholder, HNA Group.

Chief executive John Borghetti said Virgin's entry into Hong Kong and greater China is critical to the airline's international strategy, and will it to "tap into Australia's fastest growing and most valuable inbound travel market."

Virgin Australia will operate five return services a week between Melbourne and Hong Kong, using dual aisle Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
