Jetstar passengers may make it out of Bali but those travelling with Virgin will remain stranded after the airline decided it is still too dangerous to fly.
Virgin has cancelled several flights on Saturday and others, including some on Sunday, remain under review.
"As a result of the latest advice from our team of meteorologists, senior pilots and the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, Virgin Australia has determined that conditions in the vicinity of Denpasar Airport remain unsafe for flying," the airline said in a statement on Friday night.
Jetstar has begun operating three "recovery flights" from Bali - one to Melbourne and two to Perth - after an improvement in forecast conditions, but all other scheduled flights remain cancelled.
The airport at Denpasar was reopened on Thursday afternoon after ash from Mt Rinjani on the nearby island of Lombok started moving to the south and no longer towards Bali.
Jetstar is expecting to make an announcement about Saturday flights late on Friday while Virgin says a further announcement regarding the rest of its weekend flights will be made on Saturday.
AirAsia said its flights to and from Bali were operating as normal on Friday except four between Denpasar, Melbourne and Sydney.
