The ash cloud hanging over Indonesia has improved, allowing Australian airlines to resume limited flights out of Bali, to the relief of stranded travellers.

Virgin says four of its flights will depart Bali's Denpasar Airport for Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide on Monday, with some having earlier take-off times than previously scheduled.

The conditions allow "limited flying during daylight hours" only, and Virgin cancelled one Denpasar to Melbourne flight and all of its flights into Bali on Monday.

People with Virgin tickets to Bali are able to transfer these to alternative holiday destinations.

Jetstar will have five flights out of Denpasar on Monday, and it is prioritising those passengers who have been waiting the longest.

"We're planning to operate a modified schedule to give ourselves the best chance of getting flights out of Bail in daylight hours," Jetstar said in a statement.

The airline hopes to begin flying Bali-bound customers on Tuesday if conditions allow.

Volcanic ash from Mt Rinjani, on the island of Lombok, has been blowing toward Denpasar for more than a week after the volcano started emitting debris last month.
