The Australian Privacy Commissioner is to investigate claims that the personal details of Vodafone customers were available on the internet.
The telco is conducting its own investigation into how the names, home addresses, phone logs, driver licence numbers and credit card details of customers found their way onto the web.
Privacy commissioner Timothy Pilgrim said the first step of his office would be to determine whether Vodafone's activities constituted a breach of the Privacy Act.
"I am concerned about the amount of personal information that may have been disclosed," he said in a statement on Monday. Mr Pilgrim said he had spoken with Vodafone boss Nigel Dews. "
He has assured me of Vodafone's full cooperation."
