TV personality David Koch says legalising voluntary euthanasia would help ease the strain on families facing end-of-life medical decisions for a loved one.
"There can be some pretty horrible discussions between siblings - and guilt that comes after it about whether you've made the right decision or not," he told FiveAA radio on Tuesday.
Politicians in Koch's home state of South Australia will this week debate another bill to legalise voluntary euthanasia, the 14th attempt to pass such laws in the state.
Koch has thrown his support behind voluntary euthanasia, saying it will only become more important with Australia's ageing population.
"My view is that it should be allowed to happen," he said.
"We're all human beings and we've got to be allowed to die with dignity as long as there are guidelines."
He said his own mother wants to make her own decisions on her end-of-life care and already has a plan in place.
"It is really confronting for a family to discuss but she's pretty determined about it and to say, 'It's my life'," Koch said.
Voluntary euthanasia would also provide necessary legal protections to doctors and medical staff, the Sunrise host said.
"You don't want it to lead to putting our medical professional legally in harm's way.
"Doctors need protection too."
