For the second year in a row, Swedish car maker Volvo has taken out Australia's most coveted motoring award.

The Volvo XC40 has been named the Wheels Car of the Year for 2019, following on from the company's win with the XC60 in 2018.

Wheels magazine editor Alex Inwood said this year's win for Volvo showed its previous success was no fluke.

"There may never have been a more successful company turnaround than Volvo's recent form," Mr Inwood said.

"A most worthy winner and ultimate confirmation that the auto universe has truly shifted."

The XC40 narrowly beat the Subaru Forester for the Wheels gong, earning praise for its features, even with the entry level model.

"It is packed with plenty and, as our rigorous testing program proves, it delivers in all key areas," Mr Inwood said.

In other awards announced on Wednesday night, the Ford Ranger Raptor was named the best four-wheel-drive by 4X4 Australia magazine and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS was named Motor magazine's Performance Car of the Year.

With a pricetag topping $720,000, the 911 is the most expensive car to ever take the performance title but Motor editor Dylan Campbell said it left the judges "gobsmacked".

"Let's face it, dreams are often out of reach, maybe for most of us, but if they inspire us and give us something to aspire to, that's surely a positive thing," Mr Campbell said.

"And our winner is utterly breathtaking."
