Injured American ski star Lindsey Vonn has hinted she could continue competing after all in what is her final competitive season.

After skiing out of a super-G race in Cortina on Sunday Vonn admitted that she may not compete again citing severe pain in both of her knees.

But the most successful female skier in World Cup history said on Wednesday she remains "hopeful" she can fix her ailing knees and race again.

"I'm taking things day by day and we will see what happens," Vonn wrote on Instagram.

"I know that I might not get the ending to my career that I had hoped for, but if there is a chance, I will take it."

The 34-year-old said she would not take part in Thursday's first training run for Saturday's World Cup downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Vonn made a belated season debut in the Cortina races, owing to another knee injury sustained in November. She planned to ski this season and one final time next season in December at her favourite venue of Lake Louise before quitting.

With 82 World Cup wins to her name, she is chasing the all-time record of 86 from Swedish icon Ingemar Stenmark.
