American ski star Lindsey Vonn made it a dozen World Cup wins in Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy and 79 overall when she dominated the women's downhill on Saturday.

Vonn clocked 1m:36.48s on the sun-drenched 2,660 metre Tofane piste to win her first downhill of the season the day after coming second on the same course.

Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather was second a massive 0.92 seconds back, and Vonn's USA teammate Jacqueline Wiles surprised with a wild ride to third place.

Vonn has now won six downhills and Super-Gs each in Cortina, and overall is just seven wins shy of the all-time record 86 victories from Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark.

"I had a good run today. It's always great skiing here. Twelve wins in Cortina is amazing, it is so much fun skiing here," Vonn said.

Looking ahead at next month's Olympics in PyeongChang, where she hopes for a second downhill gold following 2010 in Vancouver, she added: "I am well within my plan for the Olympics."
