Voting ends in Mali presidential election

Polling stations across Mali have closed in the second round of the country's presidential election.

Polling stations have closed across Mali, marking the end of a presidential election run-off which passed without serious incident although early voting was hampered by torrential rain.

Most voting booths opened at 8am (1800 AEST) on Sunday and closed 10 hours later, although downpours delayed the start of the election in some parts of the capital Bamako and other southern towns.

Officials at some polling stations in Bamako said turnout appeared to be less than half what had been achieved in the July 28 first round, when a higher-than-expected 48.9 per cent of the electorate cast their ballots.

Almost seven million Malians were eligible to choose between former prime minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and ex-finance minister Soumaila Cisse to lead the country's recovery following a military coup that ignited an Islamist insurgency and a French-led military intervention.
