W-League semi-finals set

Canberra United and Melbourne City will host W-League semi-finals on the weekend preceeding Australia Day.

Canberra United and Sydney FC will open the W-League finals series, facing off for a likely W-League grand final berth against Melbourne City.

Football Federation Australia confirmed the details for the semi-finals on Monday, with the positions of the top three sides locked in with a round of matches still to play.

Second-placed Canberra and third-finishing Sydney will duel on Sunday January 24 in the first semi-final.

United won their only previous meeting this season 3-0 in October during a round played without internationals.

Premiers Melbourne City play the next day as part of a double header with their A-League side at AAMI Park.

Their opponent will be determined by the final round of matches this weekend.

Brisbane Roar are in the box seat and must avoid defeat to fellow finals-chaser Newcastle Jets to book their place in the final four.

Adelaide can also reach the playoffs if the Jets win and they upset Canberra.

Both matches will be broadcast on the ABC and Fox Sports.

The W-League grand final will be staged on January 31.

Should Melbourne City progress to the decider, it is likely to be held at AAMI Park.
