WA budget papers show household fee hike

The WA opposition says the average household will face increased costs of more than $1000 a year by the end of the McGowan government's first term.

The West Australian premier has defended the state budget after the opposition pointed to the forward estimates showing household fees will increase by more than $1000.

Shadow Treasurer Dean Nalder said on Sunday that average annual household fees and charges would reach $6753, up from $5661 in 2016/17.

On top of the $438 increase this financial year fees and charges will increase by $271 in 2018/19, $204 in 2019/20 and $178 in 2020/21.

"The government says everyone needs to share the pain to pay for budget repair, but this government is not actually fixing the budget," Mr Nalder said.

"Household fees and charges are increasing, taxes are increasing, new taxes are being brought in, jobs are being lost and debt is increasing."

Mr Nalder also accused Labor of going into the state election with "extravagant, unfunded and unaffordable pork-barrelling".

Premier Mark McGowan said while forward estimates provided an important indication of what a government would do, there were still decisions to be made on a yearly basis.

"Under the former Liberal government, the price of utilities went up by a far greater degree than is predicted under this Labor government," he told reporters.

"It's a bit rich for the Liberal party to be criticising considering what they left us and what they did in office.

"The Liberals and Nationals were the most irresponsible government in the history of Western Australia when it comes to finances ... so I think they should curl up in a ball and stop being difficult and stop complaining."
