An out-of-control and unpredictable bushfire is threatening lives and homes in Western Australia's Great Southern region.

An emergency warning has been issued for the northern part of Orana in the City of Albany.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services warns.

Burning embers are also likely to be blown around homes, residents have been told.

But the fire threat has weakened for parts of King River, with DFES downgrading it to a watch and act alert.

That blaze is controlled but not contained.
