Convicted drug trafficker and controversial businessman John Kizon is in a critical but stable condition after crashing his car outside a Perth hospital during a suspected medical episode.

Police say the crash happened outside Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Nedlands about 9.40pm on Tuesday.

The 56-year-old smashed his BMW into a parked vehicle, then travelled through several bollards and hit a tree.

Often referred to as a "colourful Northbridge identity", Mr Kizon has had several prominent run-ins with the law over the decades, including serving a prison term as a young man for heroin trafficking.

His bikie connections are also well-known, including his friend Troy Mercanti who has been a member of the Coffin Cheaters and Finks gangs.

Police have even questioned AFL premiership player Ben Cousins and his former West Coast teammate Michael Gardiner about their associations with Mr Kizon and Mr Mercanti.

Mr Kizon has long said he is an honest businessman who police continue to harass due to his criminal past.

When asked about the crash, premier Mark McGowan said he was glad no one else was hurt in the crash, which police are investigating.

"Obviously, I hope he recovers," Mr McGowan told reporters on Wednesday.
