D'Arcy Short has plundered his maiden ton at domestic level, helping Western Australia warm up for Saturday's one-day cup final with a clinical nine-wicket win over the Cricket Australia XI.

WA paceman Simon Mackin snared five wickets on Tuesday, when the CA XI posted a total of 179 at North Sydney Oval.

It was never going to be enough.

WA peeled off the runs required in 30.2 overs. The table toppers have progressed directly to this weekend's final in Hobart.

Short and Hilton Cartwright, the incumbent Test No.6 batsman, shared a 109-run stand after they were promoted to open ahead of Shaun Marsh and Michael Klinger.

WA coach Justin Langer told Short, who had been batting at No.7, about the reshuffle during the innings break.

"I was sitting down eating lunch. It was good to get the nod, I don't mind being thrown into the deep end," Short said after smashing six sixes in his unbeaten knock of 119.

"I probably won't be batting at the top of the order next game but it was good to get an opportunity and show I can do it.

Cartwright scored 34.

Mackin finished with figures of 5-33. Andrew Tye, recalled to WA's XI after playing for Australia during the Twenty20 series in India, picked up two wickets.

The match was played on a more-placid pitch than the dangerous deck that led to Sunday's fixture at the same venue being abandoned mid-chase.
