Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says he will talk to Western Australia's premier about the state getting a minimum return from the GST.

Mr Shorten told reporters in Melbourne on Sunday that he understood, with the state only receiving a 34 cents in the dollar return, why people were "outraged".

"All sides of politics (should) roll up their sleeves and get down to work, improving the deal that Western Australia gets, because clearly what's happening now, the status quo, is unacceptable," he says.

The issue came up again over the weekend when the Perth Now website revealed that six federal Liberal party leaders gave the same reply to questions about WA's GST share.
