WA government's list of notorious killers

WA's Attorney-General has six convicted murderers in mind for proposed legislation allowing him to order a suspension of their prison release consideration.

WA ATTORNEY-GENERAL JOHN QUIGLEY'S 'WORST OF THE WORST'

CATHERINE AND DAVID BIRNIE

The couple raped and murdered four women in Perth in 1986. He also raped and held captive Kate Moir, who escaped. Catherine Birnie, 66, is due for parole review next year. He took his own life in jail in 2005, aged 54

WILLIAM MITCHELL

Mitchell, 48, used an axe to murder a 31-year-old woman and her children aged 16, seven and five in Greenough in 1993. Two victims were sexually assaulted and aspects are so shocking they remain suppressed. He was sentenced to an indefinite jail term, but that was overturned in 1996. A parole review is due next year

DOUGLAS CRABBE, 71

Killed five people and injured 16 others by driving his truck into the Northern Territory's Inland Motel in 1983 after he was refused service. He was moved to WA in 2005 after applying for a transfer to be closer to his family and completed his 30-year minimum non-parole period in 2013

PETER MALONEY, 60

Killed a 16-year-old girl in Esperance in 1978, then murdered a 65-year-old pensioner 11 months later. He was sentenced to death but was later commuted to life in jail. His next parole review is due in December

DAVID MASTERS, 52

Killed a 21-year-old British tourist in a backpackers' lodge in Darwin in 1991 after trying to rape her. While in jail, he admitted raping and strangling a 30-year-old woman in her Perth home in 1987. He was transferred to WA in 1999 and sentenced to a second life term. He is due for parole review this year

JAMES ALEXANDER TILBURY, in his 70s

Strangled a woman he lived with in 1971. He was sentenced to death but was later commuted to life in prison. Two years after his release, he raped and murdered a hitchhiker in 1989.
