WA jobs data 'early Christmas gift': Wyatt

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures have revealed WA's unemployment rate fell to 5.7 per cent in October, down from six per cent in September.

Western Australia's unemployment rate fell to 5.7 per cent in October, which the state's treasurer has described as an early Christmas present.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released on Thursday revealed WA's unemployment rate was down from six per cent in September.

It is the state's lowest unemployment rate since September last year.

WA Treasurer Ben Wyatt described the data as "stunning results", saying about 11,000 full time jobs were created in the state last month.

"It's obvious from that figure that many households will be getting a real boost heading into the Christmas season, and for me as treasurer, it's a very welcomed early present to see this impact on WA households," he said on Thursday.

Mr Wyatt said there had been about 48,000 people employed in WA since last year's state election.

"Of these, 60 per cent of them are women, which is further proof of the benefit of our efforts to diversify the economy," he said.

Opposition leader Mike Nahan agreed the overall numbers were very good, but said it was due to the mining sector rather than the state government's policies.

"I think what we've seen right now is an imbalanced growth," he told reporters.

"The mining sector's doing very, very well to the point that they're running out of labour and wages are going up.

"On the other side, we see the housing sector, retail and hospitality struggling and laying people off."
