A man has been charged after he allegedly impersonated a police officer at a Perth hotel and assaulted an escort.

Police allege when the man arrived at the hotel room to visit the escort on Tuesday night, he told her he was from the Australian Federal Police.

He entered the room and "arrested" and restrained the woman, police say.

She was hit on the head with a replica firearm and although she was able to break free, the assault continued with the man using a kettle as a weapon.

Hotel management heard the disturbance and intervened, holding the man until police arrived.
