A young West Australian man has died from meningococcal disease while visiting Tasmania.

WA's Department of Health said it had provided information, preventive antibiotics and a vaccine dose to the man's close contacts.

This year so far, there have been 15 cases of the disease in WA compared to 23 in 2016, while Tasmania has a higher rate of the potentially deadly W strain than other states.
