WA mayor attacked at community meeting

A man is facing assault charges after a West Australian mayor was attacked at a community meeting to discuss a controversial development project.

A 67-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a Perth mayor who was left with a bloodied cut during a public meeting about a controversial development.

A scuffle broke out at the Midland Town Hall on Monday night after the man allegedly hit City of Swan Mayor David Lucas with a microphone at a closed meeting of 150 members of the public.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts, who was at the event, said the man appeared very intoxicated when he sat down next to her.

"He had been talking incessantly in my ear and he did smell of a lot of alcohol," Ms Roberts told reporters on Tuesday.

She says the man got up at the end of the meeting and demanded he have his say.

"He was an annoying, friendly drunk," she said, who had not made her feel threatened.

Mr Lucas received a cut to his head and was treated at Midland Hospital while the offender was treated at the scene.

The man will appear at Midland Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
