WA, NSW want more life in Shield pitches

Western Australia and NSW players both want more life in Sheffield Shield pitches as they chase outright wins to qualify for next month's final.

Western Australia and NSW have played out tame draws on placid pitches the past two weeks which has hurt the chances of both making next month's Sheffield Shield final.

Following the draw in the clash in New Zealand, the two teams backed up at the WACA and it was another batting dominated four days.

The Blues scored 316 with Daniel Hughes hitting his first career century making 124 before the Warriors responded with 8(dec)-511 with Cameron Bancroft scoring 144 and Marcus Harris 120.

WA had four sessions to force the result but NSW didn't give them a sniff highlighted by an unbeaten 129 by Kurtis Patterson.

The result leaves NSW in fourth position on the Shield table with 28.31 points while WA are fifth on 26.55. With three games remaining, they are chasing Queensland (36.98) and South Australia (30.39) needing outright wins to book a spot against the Bushrangers.

Patterson's unbeaten 129 in the second innings to secure the draw earned him man of the match honours in his first century since December 2014 against Queensland.

While happy with that, he was disappointed to play out a second straight tame draw and wants more life in the pitches starting in Coffs Harbour next week against South Australia.

"We've got South Australia and Tasmania to come, and then the Vics as our last game," Patterson said.

"There are no weak teams in this competition so we are going to have to play well and travelling up to Coffs Harbour next game it's renowned to be quite a flat wicket.

"We are going to have to work really hard to get those six points and give us the best chance to get second spot."

WA captain Michael Klinger could'nt fault his team's performance against NSW but the flat WACA deck left them virtually no chance of forcing the result. He hopes that starts to change next week against Queensland.

"We're certainly still a chance," Klinger said.

"The main thing is that we play the two teams above us, South Australia once and Queensland twice, so that leaves it in our own hands. It's going to be important that we make sure they are six-point games going forward."
