WA paceman Richardson eyes 150km/h mark

WA paceman Jhye Richardson will aim to continue his strong form when he lines up against NSW in this week's Sheffield Shield clash at Perth Stadium.

Emerging star fast bowler Jhye Richardson has set his sights on hitting the 150km/h mark, but not this week against NSW.

Richardson has already notched four ODIs and seven T20s for Australia, generating significant pace despite his 178cm height.

The 22-year-old snared figures of 5-47 and 2-48 in the recent win over South Australia, and he'll be back in action this week when WA host NSW in the first Sheffield Shield clash at Perth Stadium, starting on Tuesday.

One of Richardson's big focuses this season has been on becoming a more-consistent bowler, but he would also love to crack the 150km/h mark.

"I've not hit 150 yet. It's close. It's probably something I'll try to do this year in the Big Bash," Richardson said.

"It's not all about pace nowadays, but I'd like to think they're still coming out quick enough."

Richardson has only played nine first-class matches, and he knows he has plenty to work on despite his early success.

"Throughout my short career already, I've probably been known as someone who tries too many things - someone who tries all the tricks and doesn't quite get it right on a consistent enough basis," Richardson said.

"So for me, it's just being able to become more patient and finding out what works for me to be able to do that.

"It's more subtle differences for me.

"The main thing we want to keep consistent is the run-up speed, and then it's up to me to decide how I want to use the crease and how I want to swing the ball to specific batsmen."

WA sit second on the Shield table after two wins and a draw from their opening four matches.

After beating Queensland last week to move into third spot, NSW will be without rested Test pace trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Sean Abbott, Harry Conway and Greg West come into an extended Blues squad, while WA welcome back spinner Ashton Agar and Marcus Stoinis.

Both teams are unsure of what to expect from the drop-in pitch at Perth Stadium, which has hosted only a handful of short-form matches so far.

The Shield match will be a major trial for the deck ahead of Australia's Test against India there in December.

SQUADS:

NSW: Peter Nevill (capt), Sean Abbott, Harry Conway, Trent Copeland, Jack Edwards, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Nick Larkin, Nathan Lyon, Stephen O'Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Jason Sangha, Greg West.

WA: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Ashton Turner, Ashton Agar, William Bosisto, Hilton Cartwright, Cameron Green, Liam Guthrie, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kelly, Shaun Marsh, David Moody, Jhye Richardson, Marcus Stoinis.
