WA premier kicks Labor MP off Twitter

WA Labor MP Darren West has been ordered by the premier to delete a social media account over a controversial "rape prevention tips" post.

A West Australian Labor MP has been ordered to delete a social media account by Premier Mark McGowan after a controversial "rape prevention" post.

Darren West retweeted a list of "Ten Rape Prevention Tips" which included "when you see a woman walking by herself, leave her alone".

He then deleted his Twitter account.

In his final post, Mr West said he was following the lead of federal Labor MP Ed Husic, who bowed out of the social media platform's "bully pulpit" last year.

But Mr McGowan told 6PR radio on Tuesday: "I rang him and said he should get off".

"He made a mistake. He retweeted something without reading it properly," Mr McGowan said.

"A lot of people make mistakes in the online world and he's just one of them.

"He's an MP so he's held to a very high standard obviously."

Asked about it in parliament, Mr McGowan went on the attack, saying in 2013, then-Liberal minister Peter Collier unwittingly "liked" a photo of a young man taking part in the "sneaky nut" prank popularised on Chris Lilley's Angry Boys TV show.

He also cited Daniel Parasiliti, a Liberal candidate for last year's state election whose old social media posts - including a graphic sexual comment to a woman after she challenged his views about the apology to indigenous Australians - came back to haunt him.

"He actually wrote the most vile and offensive things," Mr McGowan said.

It's not the first time Mr West, a parliamentary secretary, has gotten himself in hot water with edgy tweets.

During the Canning by-election in 2015, he retweeted jokes about Liberal Andrew Hastie's Afghanistan war service that were labelled distasteful.
