Two regional prison guards in Western Australia have allegedly been caught using drugs and alcohol, and have been stood down from duty.

Two prison guards at Bunbury Regional Prison in Western Australia have been stood down from duty and one of them has been charged by police following the alleged discovery of drugs and alcohol.

The Department of Corrective Services said under a new drug strategy, contraband searching and testing was carried out through random and intelligence-led methods.

"We are committed to a robust and balanced approach to tackling drugs in prison, with initiatives including waste water drug monitoring, a review of the penalties and sanctions for trafficking drugs to ensure they are a sufficient deterrent, and increasing the number of drug detection dogs across the prison estate," a statement read.
