WA prison officer charged over meth deal

A Perth prison guard allegedly made a $100,000 down payment on a deal for 1kg of methylamphetamine.

A 72-year-old prison officer has been arrested over an alleged $100,000 drug deal at Perth's Crown casino resort complex.

Police allege the officer, who has worked with the Department of Corrective Services for 37 years, gave the money to another person at the hotel on Thursday as a down payment for one kilogram of methylamphetamine.

The man has been charged with one count of conspiracy to supply a prohibited drug and dealing with proceeds of crime.

A 48-year-old woman has also been charged with one count of conspiracy to supply a prohibited drug.

Both were remanded in custody after appearing in the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.

Police said the charges were the result of a joint investigation into a criminal syndicate intent on moving commercial quantities of methylamphetamine into Western Australia.

They said evidence was also seized during raids at several properties linked to Perth-based syndicate members.
