WA prisoner dies after attack by inmate

A prisoner who was attacked by another inmate in a WA jail has died in hospital after his family decided to remove his life support.

A 65-year-old prisoner who was attacked by another inmate in the exercise yard of a Perth prison has died in hospital.

The Western Australia Department of Justice said the man was immediately attended to by Hakea prison guards after the April 15 assault, which caused him to fall and hit his head on the concrete.

He had surgery but remained in a critical condition and died on Wednesday after his family decided to remove his life support.

"Police are investigating the matter as a stand-alone incident and the Department of Justice is reviewing the matter as well," the department said in a statement on Friday.

A prisoner was attacked at the same jail on February 26 and died a fortnight later.

Police have charged six men over the death of the man, 46-year-old Alf Deon Eades, ranging in ages from 20 to 23.
