A man bitten by a shark off WA's southern coast has been discharged from hospital, with one woman saying he did not even ask for a bandage.

The Department of Fisheries said the victim was believed to have been diving from a boat and spearfishing when he was attacked by an unknown species of shark just after noon WST on Friday.

He was treated for minor injuries at Albany Hospital and discharged just before 4pm WST.

A worker at Cheynes Beach Caravan Park, who did not want to be named, said the man had been off the end of Bald Island.

She said he was calm after walking out of the ocean and was driven to hospital by a friend.

"No ambulances were called - nothing like that," she told AAP.

"They just took themselves in. They didn't even ask for bandage."

Fisheries continues to investigate the incident and has urged water users to take extra care around Bald Island.

Seventeen-year-old Jay Muscat died in late December last year when a suspected white pointer attacked him at Cheynes Beach while he was spearfishing with friend Matt Pullella.

Mr Pullella saw the attack and shot a spear into the shark's mouth as it then moved towards him.
