WA teen fined for kicking a quokka

A WA teenager who kicked a quokka at Rottnest Island has been granted a spent conviction and fined $2500.

An 18-year-old Perth man who kicked a quokka two metres into the air has been fined $2500.

Nathan Jacob Schuitema pleaded guilty in Fremantle Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to animal cruelty over the December 7 incident at Rottnest Island.

The quokka wasn't found after it was kicked in the back by the teenager.

The magistrate granted Schuitema a spent conviction due to his young age and because he had no prior criminal record.

Outside court, Schuitema apologised to the Rottnest Island Authority.

"I respect animals and I'm very embarrassed for what I did," he said.

Earlier this year, two French backpackers were fined $4000 each after they used a deodorant can and lighter to burn a quokka.
