WA youth apartment block non-compliant

External cladding similar to the Grenfell Tower in London has been found at an apartment refuge for youths in Perth.

An apartment for homeless youths in Perth has similar external cladding to the deadly Grenfell Tower in London.

WA Housing minister Peter Tinley told parliament on Tuesday that the cladding on the four-storey Leederville building contained combustible material that was not compliant with the Australian building code.

Foyer Oxford has 98 apartments for youths, including 24 for young parents and their children.

Foundation Housing, which leases Foyer Oxford from the Housing Authority, said the safety of residents, commercial tenants and staff was a primary focus for the organisation.

"Foundation Housing is focused on urgently implementing recommendations made by independent experts regarding fire safety measures to further improve existing standards at the building," the company said.

"Foundation Housing is working with the Housing Authority and other stakeholders."

The $23 million project was completed in January 2014 and won the Premier's Awards for Excellence the following year.

At least 79 people died when fire engulfed the London tower block earlier this month.
