Wacka lashes 'holier-than-thou' Labor

Nationals backbencher John Williams says Labor white collar crime warrior Sam Dastyari should 'look in the mirror' as it pushes for a banking royal commission.

Nationals senator John "Wacka" Williams has lashed Labor's "holier-than-thou" calls for a banking royal commission, saying opposition senators had voted against moves for such an inquiry last year.

He's also taken a swipe at Labor frontbencher Sam Dastyari, the party's white collar crime warrior, who has come under fire for having a company with links to China pay his debt.

"It was not long ago that Senator Dastyari was saying `we need to get right into this white collar crime'," Senator Williams told parliament on Wednesday.

"Perhaps a good look in the mirror might be my advice to Senator Dastyari."

Senator Williams said Senator Dastyari was among those who last year voted against a Greens motion for a royal commission into misconduct in the financial services sector.

He, on the other hand, crossed the floor to vote with the Greens.

But Labor was now grandstanding on a banking royal commission when it had opposed the federal government's move to establish the Murray inquiry into the financial system, he said.

"Now of course they're holier-than-thou."

Leader of the opposition in the Senate Penny Wong on Wednesday will move a motion calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to establish a banking royal commission.

A similar move was voted down in the lower house after the Labor leader accused the prime minister and the coalition of running a protection racket for the big banks.

Senator Williams said he would move amendments to the motion for a proper inquiry into white collar crime, including industry super funds.

"Do the job properly," he said.

"Let's clean the place right up."
