A mature 137 from Matthew Wade has kept Tasmania's hopes alive heading into the final day of their Sheffield Shield match against Victoria in Hobart.

Victoria need 276 to win after the former Test wicketkeeper's ton late on Monday had pushed the Tigers' second innings to 476.

Playing his old state, Wade was watchful early but farmed the strike with the tail and launched two massive sixes at Bellerive Oval.

"It was doing a little bit, reverse swing, when I first went out there - was tough to score," the 30-year-old said.

Wade is in a rich vein of form - his century followed four half-centuries in three previous Shield matches.

"No doubt, playing at Bellerive, I've become a better batsman," he said.

"The wicket does a lot more than the MCG, so I've probably had to find a way to bat a little bit differently and it's working for me at the moment.

"There'll always be tinkering but, at the moment, I feel pretty comfortable with my game."

Wade shared a 91-run partnership with Jackson Bird, who hit a career-best 50 at close to a run a ball.

Victoria successfully navigated six overs to be 0-12 at stumps but might face a tricky chase with scattered showers forecast on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers have clawed their way back in the match after being skittled for 81 on day one and conceding a first-innings deficit of 201 runs.

Test wicketkeeper Tim Paine chipped in with 40, after Tasmania started day three at 2-196.

Jordan Silk (90) fell in the first session to a leading edge off Peter Siddle (4-100) as the Tigers lost 3-3.

But the in-form Wade put them back on track after Alex Doolan (94) had wiped off a big chunk of Victoria's first-innings lead on day two.

The visitors posted 282, led by a composed 63 from Cameron White.
