St Helens have scored an eight-try 44-4 Super League romp over Wakefield, piling more agony on the beleaguered Wildcats.
It was a nightmare start for Wildcats' temporary coach Stuart Dickens who was thrown into the hot seat after former NRL mentor Brian Smith's shock resignation midweek.
Wakefield could only manage a Ben Jones-Bishop consolation try and Dickens said: "It's been a tough week but that's no excuse for the way we played in the first 40 minutes.
"We couldn't get it right from the first whistle. We could have folded in the second half but dug in and didn't look dead on our feet.
"Everybody has total respect for Brian Smith but obviously this seems to have had an effect on the players."
Saints were 30-0 ahead at the interval and were never in trouble with Joe Greenwood starting the rout with two tries in the first nine minutes.
Tommy Makinson and James Roby also scored two tries each with Jon Wilkin and Matty Dawson crossing as well.
Former Penrith NRL halfback Luke Walsh was influential, setting up several tries, and also kicking six goals from eight attempts.
Elsewhere, Wigan demolished reigning champions Leeds 28-6 in the grand final re-match.
