Wallabies on guard for desperate Pumas

While bookmakers give Argentina little chance, the Wallabies aren't taking their Rugby Championship opponents lightly ahead of their Canberra clash.

Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper says his team is well aware Argentina won't simply hand them their first victory of the Rugby Championship when they meet in Canberra.

Both teams are winless from their opening three games with the Australians only ahead of the Pumas on the competition ladder by virtue of last weekend's draw against South Africa.

Bookmakers are giving Argentina little chance, paying $4.75 for a victory, with the Wallabies holding a 21-5 win-loss record, and their last loss coming in 2014 in Mendoza.

But Australian skipper Michael Hooper says his side rate their opponents, who took it up to world champions New Zealand last weekend for the first 60 minutes.

"I don't think anyone who's playing them writes them off," Hooper said.

"I think they write themselves off a lot of the time, maybe it's a tactic.

"Every time we play them it's tough going - they play really creative expansive rugby and they've got some really good skills and some big forwards."

It's a return home of sorts for Argentina halfback Tomas Cubelli, who spent the last two seasons playing with the Brumbies.

Cubelli has been named on the bench, with Martin Landajo the starting No.9.

Wallabies assistant coach Stephen Larkham, who coached Cubelli in Canberra, said they were prepared for the threat he would pose once he got his opportunity.

"It's like how we tried to use him in the final, he's going to add some impact when he comes off the bench with his running game," Larkham said.

"I think around the rucks is something that we noticed when Tomas came to the Brumbies as a strength of his so having some insight his game has helped a bit and we have a plan for him and Landajo."
