Wallabies reap reward of fitness slog

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has revealed he put his players through a heavy fitness load through their June series, with the Rugby Championship in mind.

The Wallabies are reaping the rewards of a torrid fitness training load that contributed to their below-par June international series.

Following their impressive 45-20 win over Argentina, coach Michael Cheika revealed he'd taken a risk by loading up the players in a bid to have them fitter through the Rugby Championship.

During the June series Australia suffered a shock loss to Scotland and almost fell to Italy but Cheika said it was now paying off.

The Wallabies completely outplayed the Pumas in the second half in Canberra, running in five tries while also dominating up front.

On average they've scored 22 second half points and only conceded 14.

"We copped a lot of flak there but we trained them hard (in June) on purpose," Cheika said.

"We knew they'd have a bit of (fatigue) build up there but we took a bit of a risk to make sure we were getting the work in our legs to keep going."

Following the June series Cheika pointed the finger at Australia's Super Rugby sides, and said his players weren't fit enough to sustain 80 minutes of Test rugby.

But he felt they were up to it now.

"Just in the way we are able to play out the back half of games," he said.

"In Canberra there was a four and a half minute phase of play in the second half that went and set up the rest of the half for us, because I felt like we had the (better) running after that in our legs.

"I still think we can get better and fitter in that area (but) all of our finishes have been there or thereabouts."

The Wallabies have a week's break before flying to South Africa to take on the Springboks at altitude in Bloemfontein.
