Wallabies want more grunt from Timu

The Wallabies have been working on ways to get hard-running backrower Caleb Timu more involved after a quiet opening Test against Ireland.

Expect to see Caleb Timu on the charge against Ireland in Melbourne as the Wallabies make no secret of wanting to get the rampaging backrower more involved in the second Test.

Timu won a call-up to the Australian team a fortnight ago on the back of his tackle-busting ball carries through the Super Rugby season with Queensland.

With a high knee lift action, the 24-year-old has raw power that makes him hard for defenders to bring down.

But making his debut in the opening Test win in Brisbane, Timu only managed two carries while opposite - Irish No.8 CJ Stander - in comparison made 13.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika conceded this week it was tough to enter a new environment and make an instant impact with only a short lead-up to the first Test and Timu deserved another chance.

Skipper Michael Hooper agreed and openly admitted his team had been working hard at training to get Timu more involved at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

"We've worked on a couple of ways to find him carrying the ball more," Hooper said on Friday.

"He's such a threat with ball in hand and probably our back five - talking about from four to eight - probably didn't carry the ball as much as we would have liked."

Hooper believes Timu, a former Brisbane Broncos rugby league junior, would be better for the run having experienced the pace and physicality of Test rugby for the first time.

"It was Caleb's debut game so he was getting a feel for it," Hooper said.

"We're expecting him to understand the pace tomorrow and come out without those pre-game nerves to get his hands on the ball because he's such a threat."
